THE SAVAGE CLUB

The Savage Club was established in 1857 and its members, known as "Savages", were originally elected from certain specific professions - writers, artists, musicians, theatrical performers, scientists and lawyers. The Club was named after Richard Savage who had been a thoroughly disreputable actor and playwright of Dr Johnson's time. He killed a man in a brawl and was later imprisoned for debt. (1)

BERNARD EVANS was proposed as a member of the Savage Club on 29th January 1881, elected a member on 1st March 1881 and remained a member until his death in February 1922.

BERNARD EVANS seems to have been an eccentric as a Savage as described by E A Ward in "Recollections of a Savage".
